Who comes to Sherburne Commons?
Sherburne Commons is for those 55+ years of age and seniors who are concerned about maintaining their dignity and independence. Currently our ages range from 55 to 100! We provide a fine residential environment, where residents who have previously lived by themselves no longer have to concern themselves with the burdens of living alone. All our residents have a connection to Nantucket, either from living on-island for years, as former summer residents who have decided to make Nantucket their year-round residence, or who have children or grandchildren who live on island.
I need little or no assistance so when do you recommend moving to Sherburne Commons?
While you’re still active and planning for your future so the best time is probably now! All too often people think it’s too early for them to move into a senior community, however, independent living is a way for people to move before they really need help and can enjoy life without worry of the hassles of day-to-day home maintenance.
What should I do next if I am interested in residency?
Call our Executive Director and schedule a personal visit and tour, enjoy a complimentary lunch or dinner, and meet other residents before signing a Residence Agreement. A $2500 fully refundable deposit will secure an apartment or cottage of your choice for 60 days while you decide if Sherburne Commons living is right for you.
May I bring my own furnishings?
Absolutely! Residents are encouraged to furnish their new homes to their own liking. You are also free to hang your favorite pictures on walls and to make your Sherburne Commons apartment truly be and feel like your new home in all ways possible.
What are the rental terms for residency?
Apartments may be rented on a short-term or long-term basis. Residents must give two calendar months’ notice if they plan to relocate, but there are never any long-term commitments at Sherburne Commons.
What does the monthly rental fee include?
The monthly fee includes one meal a day, once a week housekeeping and linen services, maintenance assistance, emergency care aide available 24hours a day (actual services are additional costs), and local scheduled transportation. All utilities are included plus basic cable television and telephone (internet is excluded). There are also numerous on-site and off-site social and cultural activities offered that are included in the monthly rental fee.
Is financial assistance available?
All residents of Sherburne Commons are responsible for their own fees. Because Sherburne Commons is built on land owned by the Town of Nantucket there are a limited number of studio apartment offered as part of an Affordable Program. Ask our Executive Director for additional details.
How is Sherburne Commons staffed?
There is a dedicated staff of about 35 full and part-time housekeepers, managers, grounds and maintenance people, concierge/reception, activity, and dining room and kitchen personnel. Our exceptionally caring team serves our residents with true dedication and keeps our property in pristine condition.
Is there an Entrance Fee?
Yes, there is a one-time $15,000 entrance fee partially refundable over the first 9 months of residency if you decide to leave Sherburne Commons.
Who owns The Residences at Sherburne Commons?
Sherburne Commons is owned by The Residences at Sherburne Commons, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation, whose board of directors is comprised of long time local Nantucket residents.
Is it possible to purchase a unit?
A limited number of cottages are available for sale as a condominium units. As a leasehold owner you will have full ownership in your cottage while continuing to be part of the Sherburne Commons community. Ownership is restricted to those 55 and older. Are pets allowed?
Yes. Well-behaved pets are always welcomed and encouraged!
May I bring my car?
Of course! Many residents drive, and there is abundant free parking. Cottages are equipped with a one-car garage and parking.
Do all apartments have their own full kitchens?
All apartments and cottages have full kitchens. There are a few studio apartments that have kitchenettes with microwave, small cooktop and mini-refrigerator. Three delicious meals may be enjoyed daily in one of our bright, airy dining rooms with none of the shopping or lugging, and none of the cooking or cleanup, either.
What is the “country kitchen”?
The country kitchen is a full sized kitchen, attached to a siting area which is available to family and friends for a special event or just a quiet meal together.
Do residents have easy access to a computer?
Many of our residents enjoy their own personal computers, ipads or similar devices. However, there is a common computer located in the library and is routinely available for resident use for email, the Internet, or an assortment of popular games.
Are laundry facilities available for resident use?
Yes, all apartments and cottages are equipped with en-suite washers and dryers. The studio apartments have access to a shared laundry room.
How do I get my hair or nails done?
There is an exceptionally nice, fully-equipped beauty salon staffed weekly by local stylists. Residents can arrange for services through the concierge desk or with the stylist directly.
What defines an “independent living” resident?
Independent residents are able to travel in buses or cars, and can participate in activities of daily living without assistance. Some independent living residents, who do not need a full assisted living program, schedule assistance with occasional needs, or once or twice a week, still remaining “independent” in overall status.
What if I am in need of temporary assistance?
Arrangements can be made to provide temporary assistance for any independent resident if a need should arise. Similarly, independent residents may stay in their current apartment and receive assistance.
How are assisted living services provided?
Assisted living services are provided through collaboration with two agencies on-site at Sherburne, Best of Care and TUCKed In Eldercare. When services are required, having a familiar face to arrange care with goes a long way! Residents are able to also use any private duty or other home health agency staff they prefer.
Is cable TV service provided?
Free basic cable TV service is provided in all units with enhanced service available upon request. Free basic telephone service is also included in the quoted rates.
Is Wi-Fi available?
Wi-Fi is available in the activity common area of the main building. The price of Wi-Fi is currently not included in the monthly fee.
